posted 12/06/2009 Defenseman Trevor Owens of the U16 AAA Junior Hurricanes has been called up to play some weekend games for the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League. The USHL is the only Tier I junior A hockey league in the United States and represents the pinnacle of junior hockey competition that the US has to offer.
Owens, a sophomore, is a home grown product who has spent the past three seasons in the Junior Hurricanes AAA organization. Prior to that Owens played his youth hockey in the RYHA and the now defunct Impact Hockey program under current Junior Hurricane coaches Steve Sabo and Colin Muldoon. Within the Junior Hurricanes program, Owens played for the Bantam AAA team in its inaugural season under Andrew Baron and for the past two seasons he has played for U16 AAA coach Clay Cotie.
This call up to the USHL marks the first such event for a player from the Raleigh area and shows the development and growth of the Junior Hurricanes and youth hockey in general throughout the Carolinas’. Owens is a gritty, tough defenseman with tremendous offensive talent. Always a top player in his age group, Owens has shown tremendous growth over the past few years. He has demonstrated a great work ethic on and off the ice. He has paid close attention to the teaching of the tremendous coaching staff of the Junior Hurricanes and it is paying off nicely.
His first game with Chicago will be Friday December 4, 2009 in Youngstown Ohio and will play again on Saturday December 5th 2009.
Congratulations Trevor.

posted 10/13/2009 The Carolina Jr Hurricanes U16AAA team goes 4 and 1 at their second NAPHL Showcase of the season in St. Louis, MO. To start the weekend, Tyler King, having suffered from a broken jaw early in the season, really jelled with teammates Wyatt Sexton and Philip Arnold. Their line totaled 4 goals and 4 assists in a dominant 7-1 victory over the So Cal Titans. Thayer Universal stepped up in the third game of the weekend with a hat trick thanks in part to his newly purchased Bauer stick. On the down side, Coach Cotie was not too happy with his team after the game. The Canes took 15 penalties forcing Coach Cotie to sit in the stands for the fourth game.
After a Sunday morning 6am team workout the boys were ready. Their opponents, the Motor City Metal Jackets, would not be going down without a fight. The Metal Jackets got out to an early start swarming the net and scoring within minutes of the puck being dropped. The Canes kept battling and it paid off when Mitchell Eisenberg was able to put one in the back of the net with an assist from Jared Chinn. The Metal Jackets scored again half way thru the second but Universal, assisted by Kyle Halladay, was able to tie things up but not for long. Final score 2-4, giving the Canes their first loss of the season.
The Canes finished 4 and 1 for the weekend and are now 9 and 1 in the league and in second place overall. On the league leader board for the Canes is Dan Blue, tied for 3rd place with 5 goals and 9 assists followed by Ryan Fitzgerald with 10 goals and 3 assists. Sean Romeo is 3rd place in goalie standings with 3 shutouts, 1.38 GAA and a .901 save percentage.
Come support the Carolina Jr Hurricanes when they play at home in Wake Forest on October 24th and 25th against the Queen City Steam and Ashburn Xtreme. For game times check out the Jr Hurricanes website.
The next NAPHL Showcase will be December 3-6, in Rochester, NY.

posted 10/08/2009 The Junior Hurricanes Bantam AAA started the season off strong at the Pittsburgh Vipers Stars AAA Shootout tournament this past weekend. A new age bracket for the Viper Stars Shootout, which is traditionally a U16 and U18 AAA tournament, the competition was not the strongest, but the Bantam’s left no doubt who the dominant team was.
The Jr. Hurricanes dominated each and every game. The Bantam’s opened the tournament 8 to 1 vs. the Pittsburgh Predators, defeated the Pittsburgh Viper Stars AAA 5 to 1, continued with 8 to 1 wins against both the Boston Advantage and then the Allegheny Badgers in the semi-finals. Facing a top Buffalo New York AAA program, the West Seneca Wings in the finals the Jr. Canes did not rest on their laurels and came away with a 7 to 0 victory.
For the weekend the boys outscored their opponents 36 to 4 and received many compliments from the opposition and the referees alike. The Junior Hurricanes were not only given praise for their dominance on the scoreboard, but also for the physical play and the class on the ice. Despite the overwhelming scores the opposition coaches and the officials noted the Junior Hurricanes respect for the game and fair play.
It was a tremendous way to start the season and follows in the footsteps of the U16’s opening weekend in Blaine Minnesota. As well the Bantam Junior Hurricanes moved into the top 20 in national U14 rankings, landing in the 17th slot with a record of 6 wins, 0 loss, and 1 tie.

posted 08/30/2009 Carolina Jr Hurricanes alumni Zak Turco has just announced that he will be playing for the Springfield Jr Blues of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) this coming season. He attended several junior team tryouts before deciding that this was the team for him. Coach Maher of the Jr Blues said Zak “blew him out of the water” after seeing him at their June open camp. The Turco family, with the assistance of Clay Cotie, Zak’s former Jr Hurricanes coach, weighed all the options and decided this was the best place for Zak to start his Junior Hockey career.
Zak, an absolute all-star in inline hockey, did not step on the ice until the age of 14. After playing only part time that first year he became a full time Jr Hurricane for the 2007-08 season on the Midget Minor AAA team. By the second season he was named Team Captain, Most Outstanding Player and Points Leader for his team. Zak has also been on the USHL Draft List for 2008 and 2009. He made the NHL Scout List in 2009 and attended the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in 2007 and 2008.
Zak, the only ’92 on the team, is a rising senior and will be attending school in Illinois. His first game with the Jr Blues will be on September 12th. Zak hopes to move up the Junior ladder, play for a Division I College and then achieve his ultimate dream of playing professionally. You can follow the team and Zak on their website www.jrblues.com. You can also find out more about the NAHL, the only Tier II Junior Hockey league in the country at www.nahl.com.
Zak is paving the way for all North Carolina players, showing that you can play and train right here in NC with a great coaching staff that is both supportive and hockey savvy. We wish Zak all the best with his hockey future!

The Raleigh Hockey Club is proud to announce that four members of this year's Junior Hurricanes U16 AAA players have been selected by the USHL Central Scouting for participation in the United States Hockey League (USHL) draft.
The United States Hockey League is America's only Tier I Junior hockey league. Tier I Junior hockey is the highest and most competitive level of junior hockey in America. The USHL supplies NCAA Division I hockey with more players than any other league in North America. In the 2007/08 season over 170 USHL players from 12 teams committed to NCAA Division I hockey.
The USHL currently conducts two drafts in which USHL member teams are able to select players who will then tryout for the opportunity to compete for the USHL team that selected them.
The selected players are:
Daniel Blue
Trevor Owens
Zak Turco
Troy Slider
Congratulations to these outstanding athletes on this accomplishment. We wish them luck.
In addition to the U16s, we anticipate a number of the Bantam AAA players to also appear on the list of 94 birth year draftees when released.
